Across the nation in September and October, you’ll find communities coming together to celebrate the changing of the seasons and the successful harvest of another crop from the fields. This list of fall and harvest festivals is still a work in progress. I’m sure that I’ve missed more than a handful in my search of the fifty states. The Crenshaw County Shrine Club has been boiling and bagging peanuts for this event since 1970. It has been called the World’s Largest Peanut Boil.

MDI Garlic Festival – Southwest Harbor, ME – September 12, 2015
17th annual event at Smugglers Den Campground. Local restaurants, garlic growers, and breweries celebrate the harvest of the garlic crop.. There is also a large farmers market. Entry fee is $5 per person.
Harvestfest and Chowdah Cookoff – Bethel, ME – September 19, 2015
Chowdah cookoff, apple pie contest, scarecrow contest and other events to celebrate the harvest.
Saddleback Fall Festival – Saddleback, ME – September 20, 2015
Visit the ski mountain for arts & crafts, food, live music, children’s pie eating contest and other fall activities like a pumpkin patch.
Cornish Apple Festival – Cornish, ME – September 26, 2015
This free festival is held in historic Cornish Village on the last Saturday in September. Event includes apple pie contest, live entertainment, arts & crafts, 5K race and other activities. It is a fundraising event for the Cornish Association of Businesses.
Manchester Apple Festival – Manchester, ME – September 26, 2015
12th annual event at Lakeside Orchards. Admission and most events are free.
Pemaquid Oyster Festival – Damariscotta, Maine – September 27, 2015
More than 10,000 oysters are served annually at this event to benefit the Edward A. Myers Marine Conservation Fund. Held on the banks of the Damariscotta River at Schooner Landing Restaurant & Marina. Other food options available. There is also an entertainment stage, educational exhibits and other locations. Noon to dusk, rain or shine.

This is a fundraising event for the Amherst Family Center, a free drop-in support center for families with children up to five years of age.
North Quabbin Garlic & Arts Festival – Orange, MA – September 26-27, 2015
17th annual event. 100 booths of farmers, artists and community organizations. Raw garlic eating contest and chef demos. $5.00 per day for adults, weekend pass $8.00, kids 12 and under free, free shuttle and parking too.

12th annual event over Columbus Day weekend. Celebrate the harvest of the top food crop in Massachusetts.

Washington State:
Cranberrian Fair – Ilwaco – October 10-11, 2015. Hosted during the cranberry harvest on the second weekend in October. Bog tours, crafts, food and music to celebrate the harvest. Admission to the events at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is covered by purchase of a $5 collectible button. The Cranberry Museum is free. The Cranberry Trolley transports visitors between the two locations.
Eatonville Fall Fest – Oct 3, 2015. The 5th annual event at the Eatonville High School Commons. Bring a non-perishable food item, eyeglasses or medical supplies to donate.

West Virginia Pumpkin Festival – Milton, WV – October 1-4, 2015. Celebrating autumn and the harvest since 1986. More than 50,000 people attend annually. Parade, 5K run, crafts, craftsmen demonstrations and live music. Admission is $7 and free for children 5 and under. Held annually at the WV Pumpkin Park in Milton.
Apple Butter Festival – Berkeley Springs, WV – October 10-11, 2015. Held annually since 1974. Saturday morning parade kicks off a weekend of country food, arts & crafts, games & contests. Spicy apple butter is stirred in giant copper kettles in the square.

Cedarburg Wine & Harvest Festival – Cedarburg, WI – September 19-20, 2015. Harvest Festival – Lake Tomahawk, WI – September 19, 2015. Sponsored by the Lake Tomahawk Lioness and Lions Clubs. A family event, it was attended by over 2000 last year. Warrens Cranberry Festival – Warrens, WI – September 25-27, 2015. Cranfest can draw around 100,000 to the world’s largest cranberry festival. It has been going on for more than 40 years. It is always held the last full weekend in September. Features three days of activities including parade, marching bands, marsh tours, food, contests, and over 1300 booth for shopping.
