Baugher’s Orchard - Westminster, MD
Open Saturday and Sunday this fall. This farm has been operating in Carroll County for more than 100 years. The fall harvest festival is every weekend in October and includes pick your own pumpkin patch, corn maze, apple picking, face painting, pumpkin bounce, pony rides and home made ice cream. Petting zoo has llamas, alpacas and farm livestock to pet and feed. Their cider mill was built in 1986 and presses only locally grown apples. Farm Market has pies, homemade fudge, ice cream, fresh produce and merchandise. Their address is 1015 Baugher Road, Westminster, MD 21158. It is located about 40 miles northwest of downtown Baltimore.

Butler’s Orchard - Germantown, MD
Pick your own includes apples (early September to mid-October) and pumpkins (late September through October), as well as Christmas trees in late November. There are daily passes, season passes, and family passes available, with free admission on Wednesdays, which gets you access to the you-pick areas, picnic areas, giant slides, nature trails, and the farm animals, plus a per-pound charge on the produce. They have been hosting their pumpkin festival with pick your own pumpkins for more than thirty years. This year’s festival runs from the last weekend in September through weekends in October. Festival admission is $12 per person (under 24 months free) and includes free activities such as tractor driven hayrides, spider web, corn box, twisted corn maze, corn hole, giant slides, straw maze, pedal tractors and playground. Additional fee for pony rides, face painting kids crafts and pumpkin cannon (select days). They also run group hayrides by appointment. Pumpkins available up to 80+ pounds at a price of 65 cents per pound. Check Butler’s web page for dates. Catoctin Mountain Orchard - Thurmont, MD
Catoctin Mountain Orchard has dozens of apple varieties which are ripe throughout the year, from spring through winter. The fall apples are ready from late August through October. They also have pears, peaches. nectarines, grapes and plums through September, and pumpkins from mid-September through October. They have a 1/2 acre “Cut your own flower” garden and a bakery on site as well. This one is a little further out but still about a 75 minute drive from Baltimore. The address is 15036 N Franklinville Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788, which is 60 miles northwest of Baltimore and 23 miles east of Hagerstown.

Homestead Farm - Poolesville, MD
A pick your own farm with pumpkin and apple picking in the fall. Apples are generally available from late August through late October, with different varieties available throughout the seasons. Pumpkins are available from late September through Halloween. Hayrides to the patch available to the general public for $3 per person but you may also walk if you wish. The Allnut family has farmed in Montgomery County since 1763, with the current 230 acre farm a portion of the original land worked. Their address is 15604 Sugarland Road, Poolesville, MD 20837, about 11 miles west of Gaithersburg and 26 miles northwest of DC.

Larriland Farm - Woodbine, MD
A family owned and operated pick your own farm in Western Howard County operating since 1973 that has 16 acres of apples and 15-20 acres of vegetables including thousand of pumpkins. Enjoy a glass of fresh apple cider. A 20 minute tractor drawn hayride is offered on Saturdays and Sundays (per person fee). They also have a 1000 bale straw maze for fun, and a “boo barn” open every day in late September and October, with animated, not too scary ghosts and goblins. The farm is open Tuesday through Sunday in late September and October, plus Labor Day and Columbus Day. Their address is 2415 Woodbine Road, Woodbine, MD 21797, about 32 miles west of downtown Baltimore.

Lohr’s Orchard - Churchville, MD
Apple picking generally starts in mid August and runs until mid October. Apple cider is available mid-September in the market. Pumpkins are available for picking starting the last weekend of September. Weekend hayrides to the pumpkin patch and orchard are also available. Founded in 1928 by Andrew and Harry Lohr, it moved to its present location in 1974. It is run by Andrew Lohr, Jr and his family. It is a little over an hour northeast of Gaithersburg in Churchville in Harford County, MD. The address for the orchard is 3212 Snake Lane, Churchville MD, 21028.

Milburn Orchards - Elkton, MD
Family owned and operated since 1902. Apple picking runs from Labor Day through October with varieties including jonathan, red & golden delicious, fuji and more. Pumpkins will be available in the market beginning in the middle of September. Fall festival weekends, from September 14th through October 27th, will have hayrides, corn maze, non-haunted boo barn, straw maze, obstacle bounce, rope maze, farm animal zoo and other family fun activities. There is also a paint ball shooting gallery, arts & crafts and pony rides available at an additional cost. Their address is 1495 Appleton Road, Elkton MD, 21921.

Shaw Orchards - White Hall, MD
Open every Saturday in September and October. Their family farm has been producing fruits and vegetables on the Mason-Dixon line for more than 100 years. Pumpkin picking, apple picking and hayrides are available in the fall. Pumpkin season generally starts in late September and ends in November. Apples available from mid-August through October. Hayrides are $6 each with a pumpkin included. Apple cider is available, pressed locally exclusively for their farm, beginning in mid-September. There are also fall decorations available in the Farm Market. The address is 5594 Norrisville Road, White Hall, MD. It is about 40 miles north of downtown Baltimore.

Waters Orchard - Germantown, MD
This family farm offers 17 varieties of apples for picking between early September and late October. Pick half peck, peck, or half bushels at a time. Cash only. The orchard is located at 22711 Wildcat Road, Germantown, MD 20876. Doc Waters Cidery is located just down the road from the orchard, and is open on weekends for cider by the glass, bottle or growler – they’ve been selling hard cider to the public since 2018. The orchard and cidery are 7 miles north of Gaithersburg and 35 miles north of DC.

Northern Virginia

Crooked Run Orchard - Purcellville, VA
Pick your own apples on weekends and extended weekends. They grow twelve varieties of apples, starting in August or early September, plus red raspberries, plums and pears. Pumpkins and other gourds are available in September and October. Price is generally $1 per pound – they take cash or checks only. No admission fee, and parking is free. Located ten miles west of Leesburg, at 37883 E Main Street, Purcellville VA 20132. This family farm dates back six generations.

Great Country Farms - Bluemont, VA
U-pick pumpkins and apples during the fall, plus other produce all season long. There are also several festivals available throughout the season, with extra fun, demos, seasonal treats, and more. The 2.5 acre cornfield maze takes around 30 minutes to complete. Fresh pressed apple cider and cider donuts are available, plus wagon rides, pig races, pumpkin munching dinosaur, gem mining, barnyard animals, five acre farm play area with slides, jumping pillow, pedal carts, rope swings and miniature golf; and catch and release fishing at two stocked ponds. It is a 200 acre working farm in Loudoun County started in 1994 by the Zurschmeide family. Special events: Apple Gala & Cider Fest on weekends in September, Fall Harvest Pumpkin Festival on weekends in October, and Pumpkin Chunkin’ the first weekend in November. Open daily from late September through early November. The address is 18780 Foggy Bottom Road, Bluemont, VA 20135, which is about 60 miles northwest of DC and about 40 miles southwest of Frederick, MD.

Hartland Orchard - Markham, VA
This family-owned farm and orchard offers a variety of produce throughout the year, including apples and pumpkins in the fall and Christmas trees in November. Varieties of apples will be continuously available throughout September and October, with pumpkins available later in this season. They take cash and checks only at the orchard, but the farm also takes credit cards and has activities such as corn maze, live entertainment, hayrides, giant slide, pumpkin bowling and more on the weekends, with apple cider slushies in the fall. All four (Hank’s Christmas Trees, Hartman Orchard, Hartman Farm, and Green Truck Farm) are located on the Green family farm. The farm is at 3205 Hartland Lane, and the Christmas trees are at 12230 Belle Meade Road. The address for the apple orchard is 3064 Hartland Lane, Markham VA 22643, which is north of I-66 about 60 miles west of DC and 13 miles east of Front Royal, VA.

Hollin Farms - Delaplane, VA
A fourth generation family farm 45 minutes west of the Beltway. The farm is located next to Sky Meadows State Park in Fauquier County. The pick your own fruits and vegetables farm has apple and pumpkin picking in September and October. The address is 1524 Snowden Rd., Delaplane, VA 20114. This is about 57 miles west of Arlington and 18 miles northeast of Front Royal, VA.

Mackintosh Fruit Farm - Berryville, VA
Mackintosh Fruit Farm is a family owned pick-your-own farm nestled in the Northern Shenandoah Valley in Clarke County, Virginia. They started in 1988 with apple and peach trees, and have since added many more varieties of fruit trees and berries, and a wide variety of vegetables. Pick apples beginning in early September, and grab your pumpkins a few weeks later. (they swear you’ll never go back to canned again!) The farm is open Wednesday through Sunday, with specialty events such as Apple Butter Day and farm dinners available. They are located at 1608 Russell Road, Berryville VA 22611, which is about 10 miles east of Winchester VA, and 70 miles northwest of DC.

Marker-Miller Orchards - Winchester, VA
Twelve varieties of apples are available for picking in September and October.There is also pumpkin picking, scenic wagon rides, children’s playground and cow train.Enjoy apple cider donuts, pumpkin donuts, pumpkin rolls and 10″ pies from the bakery.Special events throughout the season, which include the Apple Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Festival. About the farm: The fourth and fifth generations of the family are farming the land. The stone house on the farm dates back to 1811 and the apple orchards were first planted in the 1930s. They are located at 3035 Cedar Creek Grade, Winchester, VA. 22602, about 86 miles west of Arlington.

Stribling Orchard - Markham, VA
They have thirty acres of apple trees with more than 20 varieties of apples. Apples are available for picking from mid-August through early November. Bakery is open on weekends starting Labor Day weekend. Purchase their apple-cinnamon-raisin bread, pumpkin pies and other local products. The main house on the property dates back to the mid-1700s. The first 100 apple trees were planted after a lease was granted to the uncle of Chief Justice John Marshall, William Marshall, in 1765. The Stribling family, who continues to run the orchard, purchased the land in 1812. Some of the trees in the orchard date back to the 1930s, but most were planted in the last 20 years. There are currently approximately 2500 apple trees.
