OCTOBER 10, 2020 UPDATE
The PS5 is currently available for pre-order with a release date of November 12, 2020 (7 days later in the UK / Europe), but consoles are reportedly sold out in pre-order everywhere. Pre-Orders have been selling out within minutes of them coming online, and a second wave of stock near the end of September also quickly sold out at online retailers.
Sony has also said that more inventory would be available through the end of the year. It is unclear what that means. We have seen at least one publication that expected there would be more available on launch in store for those that did not pre-order, and another gaming publication that speculated that all available launch inventory would be sold in pre-order by the retailers given the demand so do not expect there to be spare Playstation 5 Gaming Consoles on the shelves for purchase.
The PS5 console and controller are priced at $499.99 with the digital edition coming in at a price of $100 off – it is $399.
The Playstation 5 Starter System Bundle is priced at $769.99 at GameStop. It is listed there with a release date of November 30, 2020 and includes an extra controller (in this case the Sony DualSense Wireless Controller) and two games (Demon’s Souls and Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales Ultimate Launch Edition), plus a PlayStation Plus 1 Year Membership.
Other Pricing that we saw:
Pulse 3D Wireless Headset for PS5 – $100
PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller – $70
PS5 HD Camera – $60
PS5 Media Remote – $30
DualSense Charging Station – $30
In addition to Demon’s Souls and Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is also in the initial set of games for release in November.
JUNE 2020 UPDATE
It looks like we will get to see the first set of PS5 Black Friday deals this year!
PS5 Release Date:
There have been a lot of fake leaks already about the PS5 and when it will be released. A lot of rumors went around that the release date for the PS5 was November 20, 2020 based on Ta rumored leak from Amazon France. However – the leak was denied by Amazon France – so it is totally unclear at this point. Sony has said that it will happen during Holiday 2020, so that is likely some time between October and December this year. They have typically released console systems before Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so unless manufacturing is delayed because of coronavirus, we expect to see them in stores then. If not, we are hopeful that we will see Pre-Order Black Friday Deals at least!
PS5 Technology:
Sony released its first look at the new Playstation design at The Future of Gaming event on June 11, which skips the historic black box design of PS4 for curvy black and white plastic with blue highlighting.. The technology includes AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, GDDR6 memory (16GB), 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power, ray-tracing, SSD hard drive, PSVR hardware compatibility, a built-in 4K Blu-ray player and will be backwards compatible
Sony PS5 Price
Sony has revealed the look of its next generation gaming consoles which will include a Blu-ray model and a digital edition, but has not yet revealed the pricing. The rumors are that the pricing announcement could be delayed until August, which would give Sony and its partners/retailers time to do pre-sales. The regular price has not been announced as of the end of June but one of the rumors is that the Blu-ray version will be US $549 and the digital edition will be US $449. It was not long ago that Sony hadn’t nailed down the price – there was an announcement to that effect from the CFO in their quarterly earnings call in February.
By comparison, the PS4 and PS4 Pro were both $399 at launch but the rumor has been that it will be more. It has also been suggested by Sony leadership that they will not necessarily be the cheapest in the console war.
New PlayStation 5 Games:
The new consoles are going to be backwards compatible with “almost all” PS4 games, so it may make sense to buy the PS5 Blu-ray version. However, there will be plenty of games released to take advantage of the new technology in the next year. Many of the games do not yet have release dates, but we are sure that they are working hard to try to get them out before Christmas 2020. Here is the list of confirmed games so far as of early Summer 2020: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Astro’s Playroom, Bugsnax, Control, Deathloop, Demon’s Souls Remake, Destruction Allstars, Dirt 5, Destiny 2, Fortnite, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Godfall, Gran Turismo 7, Kena: Bridge Of Spirits, Jett: The Far Shore, Little Devil Inside, NBA 2K21, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Outriders, Project Athia, Quantum Error, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Scarlet Nexus, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, and Watch Dogs: Legion.
PlayStation 5 Accessories:
The DualSense PS5 controller is the successor to the DualShock. It has haptic feedback (delivers sensations as you play), adaptive triggers (L2 and R2 buttons on the DualSense can match tension of actions like, for example, drawing a bow and arrow ) and a built-in microphone. The Share button on the DualShock has been replaced by the Create button. Other accessories include a Pulse 3D wireless headset, HD camera with dual 1080p lenses (for broadcasting both the gamer and the gameplay), media remote for movies and streaming service navigation, and a charging station for two of the wireless controllers.
Impact of Coronavirus on PS5:
Sony released a press release in March from one of its public relations agencies that the global coronavirus pandemic had not yet delayed the PS5 release. There has been a lot of developments on the COVID-19 front since then, so we will just have to wait until early August for the release of earnings and the conference call / annual meeting for another update.
JULY 25, 2020 UPDATE
Walmart PS5 Black Friday
Walmart has its splash page for the PS5 pre-order madness up on its ecommerce website but is still a few months away from hinting as to whether there will be any black friday deals.
Walmart PS5 game options on their splash page include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West, Returnal, Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Destruction All Stars.
Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5 – This action-adventure games is the second in the Marvel Spider-Man series developed by Insomniac Games. Gizmodo UK says it “makes a gorgeously compelling case for 60 FPS”.
Demon’s Souls – This is a remake of the Playstation classic first released for the PS3 in 2009. The remake is made by JAPAN Studio and Bluepoint Games.
Ratchet & Clank PS5 – Rift Apart is a third-person shooter that follows up on the original 2016 game where Insomniac Games launched the series.
PS5 Gran Turismo 7 – The 8th installment of the Gran Turismo series is coming to the PlayStation 5. There are expected to be at least 22 cars from the Sony reveal event. The game is expected to take advantage of the new console’s ray-tracing hardware. This game will follow Gran Turismo Sport which was released in October 2017. The Gran Turismo series, which emulates the appearance and performance of real vehicles, is developed by Polyphony Digital.
Horizon Forbidden West Playstation 5 – This role-playing game in a post-apocalyptic world developed by Guerrilla Games follows up on Horizon Zero Dawn. We have seen reports that it will be released in 2021, so we don’t know yet if the retailer will actually have it for Black Friday this year or whether it will be on pre-order at the time.
Returnal – This is a third-person science fiction shooter from Housemarque which was revealed at the PS5 event. It follows an astronaut on a hostile alien planet. Eurogamer called it “super-interesting”. Housemarque is known for making Resogun and many other games.
PS5 Sackboy A Big Adventure: This is part of the LittleBigPlanet series following Sackboy with an upgrade to 3D rather than 2.5D in previous games. This is a spinoff for Sackboy from the last version six years ago – LittleBigPlanet 3. It is made by Sumo Digital on the Unreal Engine and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Engagdet said “Sackboy is back and looking better than ever.”
Destruction AllStars PS5 Game: This is a vehicular combat game developed by Lucid Games that was originally announced at the reveal event. GameSpot called it sort of a combined “Rocket League and Twisted Metal” after the reveal event. Six racers go head-to-head in vehicle combat trying to destroy the other cars while they race around. Lucid Games is a British video game developer based in Liverpool, England.
It is totally unclear at this point whether the Walmart Black Friday ad will push a discount on the new PS5 or instead opt to move inventory with a great price on the old PS4.
Best Buy PS5 Black Friday
The Best Buy website has an email notification page up for the Playstation 5 so that you can be one of the first to get its pre-order information and other PS5 updates from one of the world’s leading electronics retailers.
Best Buy has all eight of the video games from the Walmart listing on their splash page as well (just in a different order).
GameStop PS5 Black Friday
Gamestop has been one of the more reliable places to get the Nintendo Switch console this year which suggests that if supply is limited in any way because of the coronavirus that it should be toward the top of your list over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
They do not have their pre-order information up yet but they are taking email sign-ups for notification. If you are looking for information about the latest console from Sony, you can find their Game Informer articles about it on their PS5 landing page.
One of the attractive parts of going to Gamestop is that you also may be able to get a better price at the world’s top video game store if you trade in your PS4. They are currently paying between $100 and $140 in store credit for PlayStation 4 consoles in my area. It is unclear what the market will be during Holiday 2020, but this may be one way to save over Thanksgiving weekend if the sales are as hot as are expected and there are not a lot of Black Friday deals.
OLDER INFORMATION
The first Black Friday after the Sony PS5 game system release will see season low prices to generate buzz about the product and see reach buyers take advantage of big sales to stretch their budget and buy the new video game console bundle with games and become the first of their friends to splurge on the future of gaming.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals
We still aren’t sure what year it will be released by Sony but we are positive that we will have the best deals available posted here so that you can get big discounts whether it happens on Black Friday 2019, or Black Friday 2020. It seems so far away to be planning this early but this will likely be an epic gaming release that changes the entirety of the gaming market.
We will post it here when it is available!
Sony Playstation 5 Release Date
Industry analysts have speculated that the new game system won’t be ready until 2020. However, the pace of technological advancement is quickening and there is fierce competition between Microsoft and Sony to be the next to put a popular game system in the market. We will be watching closely to see whether the PS5 will have its first Black Friday in 2019, or 2020.
April 2019 Update: According to an announcement from Sony, the earliest the Playstation 5 will hit store shelves is May 2020. It is still more than a year away from launch. However, we have gotten leaks identifying some of the details already. The PS5 will be compatible with the PS4 as well as Playstation VR. It will also have support for 8K resolution graphics. Features include SSD storage, 3D audio, an eight-core CPU and a custom AMD Radeon Navi GPU. The name of the new platform hasn’t been officially released but we are continuing to assume that it will follow the series and become the PS 5.
PS5 Price Speculation
The regular price of Sony’s next generation gaming system is projected to be $399 but it could be positioned as high as $499. This $499 price point would indicate its place as a premium gaming system and reflect the new technology that it incorporates. It will probably see discounts of between $50-100 from its regular price on its first Black Friday and Cyber Monday, depending on the package and possibly an additional discount when there is a bundle of games purchased together with it. Competition via the release of another big video game system may also drive the price lower.
Ad Release Dates
We already know that Sony, Best Buy, GameStop and several other stores will be announcing big sales on the Playstation 5 over Thanksgiving weekend when it hits the market. The release of Black Friday ads is moving earlier and earlier as it could soon be as early as September when the first ad is leaked to the market. However, it seems likely that the electronics retailers will continue to wait until November so that their competitors don’t have time to match or beat the amazing prices and gift cards they are offering to buyers.
We know it is at least months if not years until the PS5 hits Black Friday deals. But when it does, we will be bringing all of them to you here. It is a virtual certainty that the retailers will be competing to bring shoppers the best price as doorbusters to get the dollars in the door. Stop back soon to continue to get updates when they are available for posting.
