Shop Elf Costume Accessories Originating in Germany mythology and folklore, the elf has played an important role throughout history. They helped save Middle Earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And they make the toys at Santa’s workshop in the North Pole, too.
How did the elf come to be associated with the creation of Christmas presents? In the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas written by Clement Clarke Moore, now more commonly known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Santa Claus was described as a “jolly old elf”. But it wasn’t until 1850 in Louisa May Alcott’s unpublished book Christmas Elves that Santa’s helper’s began making presents. The idea took further hold in the 1870s, when the idea was circulated in Godey’s Lady’s Book and Austin Thompson’s work.
It would be more than a hundred years, however, until we would be introduced to the best known Christmas elf, thanks to the popular movie about Buddy the Elf. In Elf, the Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell that took America by storm for Christmas 2003, Buddy the Elf learns that he is actually human and travels to New York City to meet his biological father. Spreading Christmas cheer along the way in a world full of closet Scrooges, despite the fact that his father initially calls security on him, Buddy helps save Christmas by restoring New York’s Christmas spirit.
What do Christmas Elves wear?
Santa’s helpers wear green or red, of course, as those are the traditional christmas colors. They also wear pointy christmas elf hats and unique large, curved shoes.
